Creative Writing Workshop

‘In My Own Words’ is a creative writing workshop designed to engage attendees to recall, reflect, and record their amazing stories.

The Irish have a long and celebrated history of storytelling, from Cú Chulainn and the Ulster Cycle to Leopold Bloom in Ulysses and a common theme in every great story is a hero and their journey.

Our workshop will allow attendees to be the hero of their story and to record their journey in an environment that is creative, collaborative, and communal.

We know there are great stories to be shared in our community and look forward to working together to add yours to the rich legacy of Irish storytelling.

WHEN: The first workshop will be held on Wednesday, April 10 from 7 to 8:30 PM
The same workshop will be held again on Thursday, April 11 from 10 to 11:30 AM.

We plan to run this Wednesday-Thursday rotation or a minimum of 4 weeks ending on May 1st/2nd with the possibility of a fifth week based on interest and attendance.

The Irish Diaspora Center is launching an Intergenerational Irish Music Tournament that will begin on Wednesday, April 3rd, 2024.

Intergenerational programs provide a means to increase contact, create meaningful relationships, foster social growth, promote cultural values, and engage all members of our community.

Our Irish Music Tournament features 16 beloved Irish songs, 8 traditional and 8 modern, that are arranged in a tournament-style bracket allowing participants to vote in each round for their favorites!

Voting results from each round will be posted daily on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

Winners from each bracket will advance to the finals in which one song will be crowned the 2024 Irish Music Tournament Champion!

Only Facebook and Instagram followers of the Irish Diaspora will be eligible for prizes so please type in ‘Irish Diaspora Center’ in the ‘Search’ window at the upper left-hand corner of your Facebook page, look for our link and then click on the ‘Follow’ button.

Pockets of Hope Community Workshops

Pockets of Hope Community Workshops

Pockets of Hope was founded in the beginning of 2022 by Delaware County native, Katelynn Devinney, after her Mom’s second breast cancer diagnosis. The non-profit is now run by three dedicated women who are passionate about supporting women during breast cancer recovery.

The Pockets of Hope team customizes hooded sweatshirts for women who are recovering from their mastectomies. Pockets are sewn inside the hoodies to hold the drainage tubes and bulbs that women need while they are recovering. These hoodies allow them to heal more comfortably and even leave their house if they want to while still having the drainage tubes in place.

In the less than two years since Pockets of Hope was founded, they have shipped over 5900 hoodies (to all 50 states and even internationally) so far. To keep up with the demand, Pockets of Hope hosts “Sewing Parties” once a month or every six weeks. Women of all ages come together and cut fabric, iron, sew pockets and hoodies, and package hoodies for shipping.

Can’t sew? No problem! We need volunteers to measure and cut fabric, iron pockets, and help package hoodies. All are welcome to this community workshop. Bring your sewing machine, scissors, or iron, and join us!

Join us on January 23rd for the IDC’s first Sewing Parties! Stop in for any amount of time that works for you - there is no specific time commitment required. Any and all help is very appreciated!

10 am - 12 pm

7 pm - 9 pm
